Baking with Bhutanese

First Time Making Snickerdoodles!

First Time Making Snickerdoodles!

Josh and I have befriended a few Bhutanese families that are here as refugees from Nepal. It’s been such a wonderful experience for us, to be able to help them settle into their new home, and introduce them to American culture. On another outing, we learned that they girls really liked snickerdoodles. What better way to introduce them to this simple, delicious cookie than to have them over to make some from scratch?

Can Random Ingredients Lead to Brilliance?

Oh, my friends… If any of you know me well, you know I love - and I mean LOVE - Bitten’s blog at the NYTimes. I came across a post today that was too good to not share. Almost even more amusing are the comments at the bottom.

Now I’ve had my share of nasty cooking experiences, but I think this one even beats me out.

Enjoy.

Happy Snack

I did a little dance.

My Husband, the Chef

Can I just say up front that I have the most amazing husband in the world? I really do. The other morning, I had woken up completely exhausted. I hadn’t slept well, and the thought of getting through the day was a little more than I could handle at 4:30 in the morning. Josh said, “What can I do to help you get through your day? What if you came home after work and went straight to bed for a nap? When I come home I’ll start dinner, and I’ll come wake you up when it’s done.”

How amazing is that? All day I was looking forward to that nap and waking up to dinner.

Guys, if you’re wondering how to get your girl to fall in love with you all over again, cook her dinner. Completely cook her dinner. Don’t let her help. The rule is you’re in the kitchen, and she’s in a hot bath or with a book or in bed, completely relieved of any responsibility for the evening. And ordering pizza or opening a box of macaroni does not count. That’s nice and all, but the utterly romantic, make-a-girl-melt is dinner from scratch. And it doesn’t have to be anything fancy.

Thoughts on Tea

Tea Paraphernalia

Paraphernalia

A few weeks ago, I had a very interesting conversation with a coworker. She mentioned having a sore throat, and I suggested a cup of . When she said, “I’ve never drank before”, I was astonished. I teased her and gave her some of mine (I keep several kinds at my desk), and told her it was an herbal , so she could just let it steep as long as she wanted. When she looked at me and said, “…um… what’s steep?” I wrote the following. As a daily drinker for years, I felt it was my duty to educate my friend. A few days later we went to the co-op and she bought her first bags of . It was a beautiful thing.

So, for anyone who might find themselves wondering about the basics, here you are: 101. Read more…
