Last night Josh told me to get out of the kitchen and go relax. Oh man, how blessed am I? Even more impressive was our feast he prepared! Roasted game hens with sage & rosemary, garlic mashed potatoes, and roasted broccoli with melted cheddar and homemade cheddar jalapeƱo croutons. Oh, how I love this man.
Josh and I dug up a plot in our back yard for a garden! Piles of sod here… goodbye lawn.
Bittman, my food-hero, posted a neat article discussing staples in the kitchen. He highlights several things that are nothing more than space-wasters (aerosol oil sprays, bottled lemon juice, dried basil), and inspires readers to incorporate new and fresh things into their kitchens (real maple syrup, homemade salad dressings, whole grains that don’t come in a box). Read here for commentary by readers and what things they suggest tossing and incorporating into the kitchen.
Things I’m inspired to change in my kitchen? Vanilla bean instead of vanilla extract and dried beans over canned.
Josh and I have befriended a few Bhutanese families that are here as refugees from Nepal. It’s been such a wonderful experience for us, to be able to help them settle into their new home, and introduce them to American culture. On another outing, we learned that they girls really liked snickerdoodles. What better way to introduce them to this simple, delicious cookie than to have them over to make some from scratch?
Oh, my friends… If any of you know me well, you know I love - and I mean LOVE - Bitten’s blog at the NYTimes. I came across a post today that was too good to not share. Almost even more amusing are the comments at the bottom.
Now I’ve had my share of nasty cooking experiences, but I think this one even beats me out.
Enjoy.
Josh and I love Friday Harbor. This last time we were there, we took our time wandering around and discovered some pretty amusing things.
Our friend, Jenn, was getting married. Emily was throwing the shower. Emily is a fellow foodie, inspiring cook, and lover of fancy things. You know this is going to be good.
