¡Ay Chihuahua!

Tonight we were on a mission. We drove all over looking for an authentic, homemade dinner. A little taqueria with some simple comfort food. Finally, driving past 128th, we spotted a sign advertising a Grand Opening for family restaurant. Our stomachs were eager!

We were also unprepared and had no camera, so these couple of shots were taken with the iPhone. Apologies, apologies, go see it for yourself, the usual speech. ;)

¡Ay Chihuahua! is located in a little strip mall off of 128th in South Everett and have been open for about three months. Their menu has a wide variety of great authentic food. Mojarra Frita (A whole tilapia, breaded and fried and served with pico de gallo, rice and beans), Camarones a la Crema (Prawns sauteed in butter and sour cream, with mushrooms and onions with rice and salad), and Chile Relleno (Roasted poblano chilies dipped in batter and fried, with cheese and a special red sauce, served with rice and beans) all called my name. But the one that topped them all was Tres Gorditas - three thick tortillas stuffed with lettuce, tomatoes and sour cream with either chicken or steak. Mmmmm… Josh knew he wanted tacos before we even pulled in, and was delighted to see dollar tacos on the menu. Choices of chicken, steak, three kinds of pork and tongue were options, and we settled two chicken, two steak, and two adovada (spicy marinated pork). I have a compulsion for ordering horchata whenever I’m at a restaurant, and was glad it was offered here as well.

After we had ordered, the owner gave us a hesitant warning… she said, “I just want to let you know, sometimes people expect something different when they order the Gorditas. These are not like the gorditas at Taco Bell.”

God bless you, sweet woman. Bring it on.

We reassured her that we were here to enjoy some real, authentic food and wanted nothing like Taco Bell. She flashed a great smile and went back to prepare our meal.

The tacos were brought out and were just what Josh was craving. Having had the opportunity to enjoy taco-truck food in Mexico quite a bit, he’s always appreciated the simple, authentic taco. Tortilla. Meat. Sparing garnish. Hot sauce. Yum. Today, he got what he wanted. The shredded spiced pork and chicken and the grilled chunks of steak were laid on two small corn tortillas and garnished with chopped onion and cilantro. (I was particularly thrilled with the cilantro - I use it generously on my tacos at home.) Lime and radish on the side, two kinds of salsas brought out, and we had all we needed. Delightful.

The Gorditas were also brought out, and were incredible. A thick tortilla had been slit open and stuffed with all sorts of goodness. The spicy shredded chicken and chunks of grilled beef were delicious, and topped with the promised lettuce, slices of tomato and sour cream. I topped it off with more salsa and hot sauce and dug in. They were incredible!

The food is delicious and authentic (I was delighted to see her patting away at home-made tortillas in the kitchen), the customer service is so sweet - we felt like we were in someone’s home. We are so excited that this new spot has opened up in town, and encourage anyone who even remotely likes food to go check them out! There was a soccer match playing, and she mentioned that on February 11th at 4pm, there was a match between the US and Mexico - we’re gonna be there! And we want to see YOU! I know I want to try something new on the menu, but I have a feeling those tacos are still going to be tempting me….

Rosemary! Thanks so much for the heads up on this Mexican restaurant. I am always looking for a good, authentic Mexican food. There is one here in Bellevue called Riconsito, close to where I work and the tacos there look similiar to the dollar tacos here! Can’t wait to try it! YUM!
