Table 219
Josh and I discovered Table 219 the other night. A tiny little spot on Broadway in Capitol Hill, Table 219 offers classic comfort foods with a bit of flair. We came away knowing we had found a new favorite restaurant.
First off, I’m going to apologize to both our readers and the restaurant owners for the photos in this post. The restaurant, the food, the presentation is wonderful. The room is dimly lit and candles grace the tables, creating a cozy atmosphere. We have a relatively inexpensive camera and are complete novices. The two often do not mix. However, just because we walked away with sub-par pictures does not mean this restaurant cannot be posted on our humble little blog! So my faithful readers, as you continue on this post, just squint your eyes and use your imagination. Better yet, go there yourselves and see it in person. You will not be disappointed.
When we started off the evening, we were brought out a glass bottle filled with chilled water and a bowl of popcorn - popcorn drizzled with truffle oil. It was a delicious and creative starter, the “chips-and-salsa” if you will of a hip restaurant. We loved it. We ordered drinks - pilsner for him, red wine for me - and settled into the long task of trying to narrow down our choices on the incredible menu.
We finally decided on a few things to share - the Parmesan Zucchini Fries with Horseradish Dipping Sauce, the French Onion Mac & Cheese, and the Rockfish Cake with Mustard Curry Sauce. Oh man. They were all amazing.
The Zucchini Fries were everything I love about fried zucchini. Perfect size for dipping and snacking, and the parmesan cheese and horseradish sauce went so well together. I could have eaten so many more…
The Rockfish Cake was good as well, a little on the mild side, but the Mustard Curry Sauce really made it. The two flavors of mustard and curry are ones I would never have thought to put together, but they were so delicious. It really went well with the fish. The cake was moist and flakey on the inside, and crisp on the outside, topped with a garnish of shredded radish, carrot, and possibly another veggie I couldn’t identify… at any rate, it was very nice.
Our favorite of the three was the French Onion Macaroni & Cheese. I make a pretty darn good Mac & Cheese at home, and this one inspired me to make it even better. A creamy comfort food, imagine the most delicious homemade Mac & Cheese with the flavors of French Onion Soup. Yum. And I loved the small red pot it was brought out in.
The portions are smaller, so we were able to save room for dessert. We chose the Apple Cardamom Crisp, that was topped with Vanilla Ice Cream and the 219 S’More , which was a small pot of what tasted like chocolate ganache, topped with a homemade graham cracker giant toasted marshmallow. Both were incredible, and we were brought out a glass of port as well, which was a nice surprise. The cardamom was another creative and delightful flavor twist on a usual comfort food, and the S’More…. that was just decadent. And I don’t even like s’mores. Now, as I’m writing this, I want another one. That’s how potent they are.
Overall, Table 219 comes highly recommended. The staff was very friendly, and the food is wonderful. There are so many tempting items on the menu, everything from Lamb Burgers with Tzatziki and Sweet Potato Fries, Crispy Penne with Eggplant, Kalamata, Caper Sauce and Sheep’s Milk Feta to Chicken Andouille Sausage Corndogs. On their breakfast menu, I spotted Table219 Benedict (two poached eggs over potato cakes made with smoked gouda and canadian bacon and topped with a creamy tomato, mushroom sauce and served with toast). We are definitely going back.
