Thai on Broadway

Tom Kha Soup - Delicious!

Tom Kha Soup - Delicious!

Josh and I love Thai food. A lot. And we’ve tried a few places, especially in our little town of Everett. But we’ve come to the conclusion that Thai on Broadway is still our favorite by far.

We’ve been coming here for years (and I’ve been coming here years before Josh and I even met!), and it’s changed ownership during this season. The old owners were great, and we were curious how the change would affect the food. We’re pleased to say it hasn’t deterred us one bit; in fact if anything, it’s convinced us we need to come here more often!

Thai on Broadway’s interior is filled with tables and chairs made with wood that was shipped over from Thailand. The uneven, darkly polished surfaces of the tables and benches bring character and charm to the place. The walls are covered with various pictures and carvings. The small, simple layout has atmosphere. The bar looks into the kitchen and we enjoy perching on the stools and chatting with the owner when we come to get take-out.

Tonight we wanted to eat in, and we were hungry. We went for a couple of their dinner combos; we both have a tendency to try to fit in as many flavors as possible into a meal! The combos offer 4 “courses” (the 4th being either dessert or a beverage), and for some of them you have a choice between two entrees. I chose Combo 2 that came with Spring Rolls, Tom Ka Chicken, Kra Prao Chicken, and Black Rice Pudding. Josh chose the Combo 3 which had Phad Thai, Red Curry Chicken, Oyster Chicken and Thai Iced Tea. We also ordered Tod Mun (fish cakes) to share, and a second Thai Iced Tea for me… that stuff is too good to share. ;)

For anyone that’s never had Thai Iced Tea, do whatever is in your power to remedy that. Soon. It’s a delicious concoction of strong black tea, sweetened condensed milk, sugar, sometimes spices, and other goodness I’m sure. I don’t know exactly how this location makes theirs, but it’s wonderful.

The Fish Cakes were nice too – several little patties, perfect size for dipping. They had great flavor and a slightly chewy texture. The sauce was sweet and mildly spicy, and the cucumber and cilantro in the sauce were a wonderful addition.

Our combinations came out next – the Spring Rolls were great – veggies wrapped in spring roll paper and deep fried till they were golden and crisp and delicious.

For the other dishes, we had choices of 1-5 stars for spice level.

Side tangent – I love it when Thai restaurants give you 5 star options. I’m a medium-spicy kind of girl, and 3 is just right! When you go to a 1-4 star restaurant, the 2 is too sissy, and the 3 is bordering uncomfortable. *sigh* What’s a girl to do? Seek out a 1-5 star restaurant, that’s what.

*stepping off my soapbox*

The Kra Prao Chicken was a wonderful dish of chicken, hot peppers, onion, mushrooms, carrots, bell peppers and basil sauteed and served with rice. But the star of my meal was the Tom Kha soup. I’ve had it at several other places before, and have fallen in love. Thai on Broadway keeps up with the best of them. If you’ve never had Tom Kha soup, please see above notes on Thai Iced Tea. Go get some. It’s a rich hot & sour soup that’s creamy with coconut milk and filled with meat (mine had chicken), mushrooms, tomatoes, cilantro, lime leaves, lemon grass and galanga, a kind of root that’s related to ginger. Its citrusy, creamy, spicy flavor is always very satisfying.

Josh’s meal was just as wonderful – the Oyster Chicken was another delicious dish of veggies and chicken sauteed together with sauces and served with rice. The Red Curry is a standard of ours – creamy spicy curry with coconut milk, bamboo shoots, pepper and basil (and your choice of meat) is something we almost always order when we come here. It’s delicious.

But this time, the dish that stole the show was the Phad Thai. Now we’ve had Phad Tahi a zillion times, and have even had it here a few times as well. I don’t know if it’s the new ownership or what, but the batch we had tonight was incredible. I’ve never had anything like it. Phad Thai is usually orange-salmon in color and is good, but has the flavor of warmed, slightly spicy noodles with tofu, peanuts, and maybe chicken. This stuff was nothing like that – it tasted like it had been grilled over an open fire. The color was different even, and the noodles looked like they had slightly charred edges, the heat was smoother and not as sweet as the other Phad Thai we’ve had. The texture was more satisfying and not the thick, gummy texture you sometimes find with other rice noodle dishes. This stuff was amazing. I kept sneaking my chopsticks over to Josh’s plate, and while we brought leftovers home, the Phad Thai was finished off. I want some now.

The Best Phad Thai in the World. Or at least the Puget Sound.

We were quite satisfied with our meal. It was topped off with a sweet, rich pudding of black rice and cream. Beautiful, delicious.

MMMMMMMM!!! It is so hard to find Phad Thai that doesn’t taste like it’s made with Ketchup! We’ll put it on our list of “places ro eat next”. Maybe we can do a double date! =)

Enos – I’m so glad you enjoyed! Help us spread the word and bring some business to them!

Adriel – For real! THAT’s what I was trying to get at – they all taste a bit boiled-ketchupy! Yes, I think a double date is called for. :)

If you like Thai on Brodway you should love my favorite place! It is Thai Siam on 15th in Seattle. That place beats all the thai resturants I have ever eaten at. Curry beef that melts in your mouth, Tom ka soup over a sterno burner and angle wings to die for. Its worth the drive down and their lunch specials are like a dinner.
