I’m almost done writing about November, I swear. I’m a little slow at these things.
We celebrate a lot around here. A birthday or anniversary gets celebrated at least two or three times, and we consider most weekends to be honeymoons. That’s just the way we roll.
My birthday this year was no exception. We went away for the weekend before (also to celebrate our anniversary), and we had some friends over for an appetizer potluck a few weeks later. The actual day of my birthday landed on a Monday and Josh instructed me to come home from work, take a nap, and wait for him to prepare dinner. This man knows how to love me.

The last time I ate meatloaf was when I was about 12. I never liked it. Pressed hamburger with ketchup on the side… where’s the bun? The mustard? The pickle?? Save me.

I’ve been addicted to making stock. Once I realized how ridiculously simple it was and how it tasted oh, about a thousand times better than the stuff in the box, I can’t stop. Our freezer is half full of gallon zip-lock bags of frozen chicken stock, lined up like little books on a shelf. Josh has banned me from making any more until I use some of it up. Thank the Lord it’s fall!

Last night Josh told me to get out of the kitchen and go relax. Oh man, how blessed am I? Even more impressive was our feast he prepared! Roasted game hens with sage & rosemary, garlic mashed potatoes, and roasted broccoli with melted cheddar and homemade cheddar jalapeño croutons. Oh, how I love this man.

Beautiful Things for Bread Pudding
Again, Bittman came through when I was wanting to try a new recipe. I’ve never tried my hand at Bread Pudding, and knew this was my year to give it a shot. I was inspired by his recipe, but inevitably tore it all apart and made it my own. It was pretty darn good if I do say so myself.

Fried Green Tomatoes and Hushpuppies
Josh and I were searching for a restaurant for a fun date. We wanted food that was creative, comforting, not over-priced but not walk-up-to-the-counter-and-order either. We were very particular with our search. Once we stumbled upon The Kingfish Cafe’s website, we knew we’d found our spot.

Goodness Wrapped in Phyllo Dough
I love Spanikopita. Josh hates spinach. What’s a girl to do? We stumbled upon Hirotiropita, a variation of Spanikopita but made with shredded pork and veggies… that got me thinking. So what did I do? Take a great dish, tear it all apart and make it my own of course!
